THE PRACTICE OF BEING: ADVANCED YIN TRAINING FOR EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE

WITH JENN WOOTEN

November 2-4 at Yoga Yoga Westlake

“Freedom is instantaneous the moment we accept things the way they are.”
-Karen Maezen Miller

When the circumstances of our daily life bring up feelings of discomfort--be they in the form of physical or energetic sensations, or unpleasant emotions--our habitual response tends to be, “I don’t want to feel that.” But not only does rejecting these sensations fail to bring us the peace we seek, it also cuts us off from large, valuable swaths of our human experience, and deprives us from the transformative potential of our discomfort.

The practice of Yin yoga--where passive poses are held close to the ground for several minutes--offers us a new way of being with the natural energy of life when it shows up in a form that we don’t like. By turning down the volume on the external distractions that fill our days, the practice of Yin yoga helps us tune in to our subtle and rich inner world, where we can learn to listen to, and dialogue with, our discomfort. And in so doing, we discover that whatever experience we are encountering in the moment is exactly what we need to help us wake up to ourselves and to our lives. By meeting the sensation as it is, and allowing ourselves to be as we are, we realize that leaning into the discomfort--rather than pushing it away--is what brings us the freedom that we so deeply desire.

In this advanced Yin training, experienced Yin students will refine their listening skills, hone their body’s own wisdom, and open to their discomfort as a means to developing emotional resilience. Through embodied experience, mindful discussion, and self-inquiry, students will learn new skills with which to encounter the natural energy of life, and how to integrate these skills into their daily rhythms so that this practice of being becomes their primary way to experience sensation.

This 12-hour training will cover the following topics:

  • The nature of pain and the human animal brain
  • The autonomous nervous system and yogic tools for self-regulation
  • How to reframe your experience of strong emotions as a key component of your humanity
  • How to create ease around discomfort by addressing your emotions through your bodily experience
  • Body sensing practice and dialoguing with sensation
  • Cultivating maitri (lovingkindness) and self-compassion
  • The importance of self-care and upholding healthy emotional boundaries
  • Practical tools to help you navigate the flow of daily emotions with equanimity

Prerequisite: 6 months of Yin yoga practice, completion of Foundations of Yin Yoga Training or permission from one of the instructors.

Sacred Self-Care: Rhythms and Rituals for Ease and Balance

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation.” -Audre Lorde

Often, we need self-care the most when we have the least amount of time to devote to it. But true self-care--the kind that fills your cup, and leaves you nourished and ready to attend to the daily necessities of your life--doesn’t rely on the quantity of time spent, but on the quality of the self-care gestures that you integrate into your life. True self-care means being deeply attuned to your own needs, moment to moment, and trusting the wisdom of your body to respond to those needs, so that you feel resourced and replenished--not depleted.

In this event, we will examine our beliefs and ideas about what constitutes self-care, as well as address common obstacles to integrating self-care into everyday life. Then, inspired by the daily and seasonal cycles of Nature, we will create a blueprint for an effective self-care practice: one that is simple, precise, and tailored to your own needs and goals. And, because change is the only constant, we will explore how to adjust your self-care practice when the shifting seasons of your life demand it.

Fanny Priest will draw from her experience teaching Yin yoga, her studies in yoga therapy, and her own self-care journey to guide you in creating a self-care practice that is truly nourishing for your body, mind, and soul. Our time together will include discussion, meditation, self-reflection exercises, and gentle, mindful movement, all in an encouraging, inclusive environment. You will leave with a detailed action plan to help you integrate the lessons from the session into your everyday life, and additional, continued support will be available after the event for those who desire it.

All abilities are welcome; no previous yoga experience necessary.

Yoga Of Relationships Workshop

“The success of Yoga does not lie in the ability to perform postures but in how it positively changes the way we live our life and our relationships.”  -TKV Desikachar

You’ve experienced how the practice of Yoga helps you feel a sense of balance and well-being in your body, but have you felt a difference in how it affects your relationships? In this 2-day event, we will explore how the philosophy and practice of Yoga can transform your relationships with your romantic partners, your family and friends, your colleagues, and your community.

Through discussion, practice, and self-reflection, we will experience ways to bring the benefits of yoga off the mat and into our relationships. We will learn practices to help us create a safe and secure container within ourselves, that we may then be able to truly listen to another, and speak our truth authentically.

Our inquiry will include the following topics and practices:

  • Healthy relationships from the perspective of yogic philosophy
  • Yin yoga to create a safe container for strong emotions

  • Buddhist metta (lovingkindness) meditation to open our heart to others

  • Pranayama for self-regulation during challenging interactions

  • The importance of self-care in the context of relationships

  • Creating healthy boundaries & speaking our truth

We have created special pricing for this event, so that you & a loved one can attend together. You will leave with a workbook containing all the practices explored in class, plus suggestions for further inquiry and experimentation. Also, additional support will be available for those who desire it.

No previous yoga experience necessary. All abilities welcome.

This event meets for 2 days at Yoga Yoga Westgate

Saturday & Sunday, February 10th & 11th
